Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, Alexandria is the second largest city of Egypt extending about 32 km along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in the north central part of the country. It is considered the pearl of the Mediterranean. It has a rich history and became a major center of Hellenistic civilization and remains the capital of the Hellenistic and Roman Egypt for nearly a thousand years. Few cities in the world have a history as rich as that of Alexandria and some cities have witnessed many historical events and legends.
Alexandria status as a beacon of culture is symbolized by Pharos, the legendary lighthouse that was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Library of Alexandria was the largest library in the ancient world and the place where the great philosophers and scientists of the time came to seek knowledge. Today, is a shadow of its former glory vanished cosmopolitan self, but still worth a visit for its many cultural attractions and still-palpable visions past.
The city today has a wide range of different archaeological sites that can be admired, as Pompey's Pillar. In addition to the archaeological, Alexandria has an abundant amount of various impressive buildings and monuments. Alexandria has an atmosphere that is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern, its ambience and cultural heritage distance from the rest of the country although it is only 225 km. from Cairo. Alexandria is also an important tourist resort.
