Located in the mountain range of Sierra Nevada of California, the Ansel Adams Wilderness is a wilderness area covering 937 square miles (362 square miles or 231.533 acres). In the Ansel Adams Wilderness are mountain glacier mount Ritter, peak of the flag and the minarets, all of which are part of the Ritter range. The wilderness area is also home to many lakes, including Lake shadow, thousand Island Lake, Ediza Lake and Lake Garnet. A popular feature in the Ansel Adams Wilderness is Devils Postpile National Monument, an unusually symmetrical formation of columnar basalt s. Visitors to the wilderness area will enjoy 562 kilometers (349 miles) of hiking trails, opportunities for technical climbing minarets and ski in winter June mountain and Mammoth Mountain.
