  • Canyon, Watkins Glen, New York

Watkins Glen State Park is the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks, with a reputation for leaving visitors spellbound. Within two miles, the glen's stream descends 400 feet past 200-foot cliffs, generating 19 waterfalls along its course. The gorge path winds over and under waterfalls and through the spray of Cavern Cascade. Rim trails overlook the gorge. Campers and day-visitors can enjoy the Olympic-size pool, scheduled summer tours through the gorge, tent and trailer campsites, picnic facilities and excellent fishing in nearby Seneca Lake or Catherine Creek, which is renowned for its annual spring run of rainbow trout.

  • Rare Photos Of The Statue Of Liberty Being Built In 1883

Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable structures in the world today, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Designed by Frédéric Bartholdi in collaboration with the French engineer Gustave Eiffel, the sculpture stands at a height of 151 feet 1 inch (46 meters); from ground to torch, 305 feet 1 inch (93 meters) tall.

A joint project between the French and Americans, it required the Americans to build the pedestal and provide the site, while the French would build the sculpture. The photographs you see here belong to the construction period of the Statue of Liberty in 1883, and are part of the New York Public Library’s Photography Collection.
