The road is a 5.2 mile long section of County Road 64. It is built on several small islands and skerries, which are connected by several causeways, viaducts and eight bridges—the most prominent being Storseisundet Bridge. In the 1970s the road was originally suppose to be a railway line, but that did not work out due to the complexity of the pathways. In August 1983 construction began on the road for basic automobiles. Six years later the road was completed. Only problem was the road cost Norway millions of dollars in construction; so a toll was charged in order to use the road. By 1999 the road was paid off and the toll was removed. The Atlantic Ocean Road is now considered a National Tourist Route and is declared to be the world’s best road trip. The road is also seen in popular automobile commercials.
